Fourth and last Future Lab to reflect on feminist alliance-building

Animations tell stories of everyday gender inequality from across Asia in fourth and last future lab.

Design by FES/Kawin Tadtiam.

At the upcoming Future Lab, the network members of one among four working groups will launch their project “Her Story Your Story”, a series of six animations telling stories of everyday gender inequality in Asia. The shorts showcase issues such as street harassment, resistance against land-grabbing, women’s engagement in peace building, and stereotypical gender roles and clichés about sex workers.

Three other projects were launched earlier this year as part of the same regional network of feminists in Asia supported by FES in Asia. The app Mango Meter, which rates movies according to how sexist or feminist they are, was launched in Jakarta and received extensive media coverage across Asia and beyond (link). The documentary about maternity rights and a discussion with labour experts from Bangladesh, Philippines and India was hosted by FES Bangladesh in April (link) and a selection of a feminist curriculum on care work was presented and debated in Dhaka as well (link).

At the final conference in Cebu, Philippines, the network members will discuss the developments of their projects and current challenges to gender equality in the region as well as discuss learnings and reflect on transnational exchanges.

The group of feminists will also meet local initiatives and representatives of the city council in Cebu City to learn about community responses and governance initiatives against gender-based violence. They will have an exchange with the local Lihok Pilipina Foundation (link to Facebook fan page) that supports women in crisis and advocates against domestic violence and the Law Center Inc., which gives free legal and psycho-social assistance to women, and advocates for local and national policies that protect women’s rights and welfare (link).

The FES-supported programme Political Feminism in Asia is an initiative exploring innovative ways to bring feminist demands into the mainstream and to build alliances across social movements. During the last three years the 22 network members from eight countries in Asia founded four working groups to address different topics of feminist concern in new ways.
