With digital and urban transformation penetrating all walks of life, we foster debate on change strategies towards a sustainable economy of tomorrow in Asia.
In 2017, in continuation of the project Economy of Tomorrow, we focus on two specific sectors of transformation, Automation and The Social City.
We engage the concept of a social and inclusive city to support dialogue among political decision makers and civil society on affordable housing, public transport and civic engagement. These three priority areas for the work by FES in Asia are key to intergenerational justice, equal distribution of and opportunities for social mobility, access to social space and family friendliness in cities.
As social projects in their own right, the automation of manufacturing industries (Industry 4.0) and its consequences for the labour market (Labour 4.0) have enormous economic impact and are changing society as a whole. To this end, we bring together economists, social scientists, trade unions and policy-makers from Asia with their counterparts from Germany and elsewhere in Europe to exchange experiences on the impact of automation on labour markets, employment transition pathways and on best-practice industrial relations.
We support policy analysis and research that bridge the cleft between economics and politics, and that bring digital transformation into this relation, seeking ways to democratize new technologies, discuss adequate qualification, and overcome economic growth without a corresponding growth in jobs for people.
