Toolkit for gender transformative communication

Featuring best practices and common pitfalls of communications within international cooperation.

Gender inequality is widespread, often unquestioned, and manifests itself in our day-to-day lives in many ways. In consequence, we often consider gender inequalities as ‘normal’ and it can be tricky to notice injustices. Therefore, it is crucial that we reflect and change our practices to contribute to real societal transformations. This is why, at FES Asia, we set out to explore what gender transformative communication means and how we can implement it in our work.

The guide Gender Transformative Communication: A Toolkit offers guidance in identifying objectives for gender transformative communication and aims to transform spaces where knowledge-production takes place. The authors Fiona Vaz, Peny Rahmadhani and Rizki Amalia Affiat lay out best practices to follow and point out common pitfalls to avoid with a focus on the thematic areas of politics and democracy, labour rights, social-ecological transformation, future of work, and peace, security and international cooperation.

The toolkit serves as a quick guide and includes multiple checklists and takeaways. It also contains guidance on how to choose the right means of communication to transform to transform gendered power hierarchies. In this way the guide aims to contribute to a culture where gender equality is prioritized in organisations and gradually leads to changes in wider societies.
