As ASEAN celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2017, women’s advocacy and civil society groups have criticised the exclusion of women’s perspectives in the formulation of the ASEAN agenda, which prioritizes economic integration to the exclusion of social issues, such as the rights of the poor and marginalised women.
These critical points and reported lacks will be addressed at the regional forum “Strengthening Women’s Rights Advocacy in ASEAN” in Manila, from 7-8 November 2017. Taking place in the lead up to the 31st ASEAN Summit, the forum is organized by a broad group of partners: Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Weaving Women’s Voices (WEAVE), Regions Refocus (link to website), Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research Education in ASEAN / South East Asia (SHAPE-SEA, link to website), and Gender Transformative and Responsible Agribusiness Investments in South East Asia (GRAISEA, link to website).
How will women be affected by the current political developments and the commitments charted in ASEAN Community Vision 2025, a strategic document for a more rules-based and people-centred ASEAN adopted in 2010 at the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur?
Meeting at the regional forum to address this question are members of women’s human rights organisations, trade unions, migrant and rural development groups in Southeast Asia, academic and research organisations working on ASEAN. At the cross-movement gathering, they will also explore an alternative development agenda with a feminist perspective, and ways to collaborate on promoting women’s rights within ASEAN. ###
