The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 brought war back to Europe, with the conflict likely to continue until a political resolution is reached. Meanwhile, the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel have reignited conflicts in the Middle East, with the risk of escalation remaining. In East Asia, rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, in the East and South China Seas, and around Taiwan could spark a confrontation between nuclear-armed powers. These global crises create significant geopolitical and economic challenges. How will bigger and smaller powers navigate the effects of geopolitical tensions in these three theatres? Understanding the motivations of players as well as the dynamic of complex conflicts and the impact beyond their own region is key.
